The press release: by Western Cape Provincial Health Department
“World Diabetes Day 2007 in Cape Town will be marked by the launch of a 10 day drive to provide health screenings to hundreds of people in local communities. On 14 November 2007, Mr Pierre Uys, Minister for Health in the province, will give a public welcome to the ‘Changing Diabetes’ Bus at its first port of call in the city, the Nyanga taxi-rank and bus terminus, where taxi-drivers, commuters and others will be invited to take advantage of free health screenings on offer. Co-hosts for the day will be the Western Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association. With working lives characterised by high stress levels, long hours behind the wheel, fast food snacking and irregular meals, taxi-drivers are at high risk of both diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases. Recognising this, the association is taking the lead in offering their active support by encouraging their members to participate and by providing vital assistance in clearing a space for the bus in the busy terminus”.
“Conducted as a partnership between Novo Nordisk (Pty) Ltd and the Western Cape Provincial Health Department, the Novo Nordisk ‘Changing Diabetes’ Bus will visit community centres and shopping centres across the city with the aim of testing blood pressure and glucose levels, of referring those at risk for medical attention, and of making vulnerable individuals aware of the nutritional and other lifestyle factors that can help prevent the onset of disease.”
The bus visited the following areas: Nyanga, Delft, Mitchells Plein, Green Point, Gugulethu, Strand, Houtbay, Gatesville, Khayelitsha, New crossroads and Malmesbury. During the 11 day road show we had 1851 visitors visiting the Changing Diabetes Bus.
