The Changing Diabetes Bus started the North West road show on 18th February 2008 and travelled around in temperatures of 34oC. This initiative was in partnership with the North West Department of Health. First stop was Makapanstad Post Office in the Moretele district. The bus then continued on a 17 day journey covering the Moretele, Rustenburg, Brits, Sun City and Swartruggens districts.
The objective of the road show was to create diabetes awareness and to improve the quality of life of a person living with diabetes. The doors of the bus were open to everyone from the different communities and aimed at having their blood glucose tested for free and to receive information on diabetes. During the road show we had 2601 visitors to the Changing Diabetes Bus.
The Changing Diabetes Bus covered about 6000 kilometres on the road show. We were privileged to visit remote villages in the North West, travelling long distances on gravel roads. One of our stops was at the Lebotloane Tribal Office and that morning we were met by the local tribal chiefs of the village to have their blood glucose tested and thereafter the local community followed. What an experience it was to visit these remote villages and spend the day with the local people.
An advertisement was also placed in the Rustenburg Herald newspaper on 22 February 2008 to inform the residents of the Changing Diabetes Bus which was to visit their area.
We received very positive feedback from all the communities we visited on the road show. Then the question, “when is the bus coming back?”
