During the month of August 2008 the Novo Nordisk Changing Diabetes Bus travelled to the Limpopo province to create diabetes awareness and conduct screenings. Our first stop was Marble Hall on the 4th August 2008. During the road show we visited the following districts: Sekhukene, Mopani, Vhembe, Capricorn and Waterberg. We had 2005 visitors to the Changing Diabetes Bus.
The highlight of the road show was definitely the day we arrived at Rambuda, a village about 40km from Thohoyandou. We received the warmest, welcome of them all. As we arrived at the Rambuda sports ground, we were welcomed by the Rambuda Support Group, all in their traditional wear and the African drums were playing to welcome our Changing Diabetes Bus. Before we started with the activities on the bus, the Rambuda support group gave us all a performance of their local song and dance on the beat of African drums. Wow! What an humbling experience!
We also visited the Ngwabe Clinic, about 30km from the town of Jane Furse, in a very, very rural area. The local community was very supportive of the Changing Diabetes Bus visiting their clinic. Everyone wanted to know when they will see the bus again and they were amazed about the services we offer to the local communities. The people were very grateful to learn more about diabetes and to have their blood glucose tested.
The Polokwane Observer, a local newspaper visited the bus at the Seshego Sports Ground in Pietersburg. They published an article about the bus creating diabetes awareness in the Limpopo province.
The road show was done in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Health.
